Brenda Pennington was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her mother was an art teacher and sculptress, which obviously influenced brenda's enjoyment of drawing and painting during her school years. Brenda won several art awards as a child, which encouraged her artistic development. However, she had her heart set on a nursing career, which didn't leave much time for painting.
Soon after qualifying as a nurse, Brenda married and started a family. The family settled in Kidderminster for ten years, before emigrating to Spain in the mid 1970s. On returning to the UK the family settled in Surrey, where they still live. A full time career in the NHS and a growing family was not conducive to an artistic way of life. However, as the prospect of early retirement loomed on the horizon, the lure of the paintbrush beckoned and Brenda enrolled for art classes at Sutton College of Liberal Arts.
After five very enjoyable years of discovering a variety of painting and drawing techniques, Brenda retired and decided that she would like to meet other people who enjoyed painting and exhibiting their work. She joined Carshalton and Wallington Art Group and made a number of friends who also enjoy an artistic lifestyle. Joining an art group has not only provided companionship, It has also offered the opportunity to exhibit and sell her work, enter competitions, attend demonstrations and workshops by other artists, participate in art critique evenings and art appreciation talks, amongst other events.
Brenda exhibits her paintings as the opportunity arises and she is happy to sell them. It gives her a great deal of satisfaction when someone likes one of her paintings enough to buy it, though She hopes that people get pleasure from attending an art exhibition, without feeling under pressure to buy anything. She thinks of painting as an enjoyable activity but would not like to consider it as a job. Any income derived from painting enables her to buy more materials to carry on painting and helps to cover the expenses associated with exhibitions. Brenda also enjoys making greetings cards, mainly for friends and family at first, though she now sells cards depicting her paintings, and handmade cards, through local exhibitions and various other outlets.
